Finding the right brushes to apply makeup can be a difficult task, especially if you’re looking for a vegan option. A couple of months ago I was online shopping on iherb (seriously the best online store for natural products) and I came across a brand called Bdellium Tools. This brand was completely unknown to me so I did a bit of research and to my delight they carried a vegan line of makeup brushes!
Bdellium tools, (pronounced de-li-um, the ‘b’ is silent) carries seven lines of makeup brushes, each with a blend of natural and/or synthetic hair bristles. I opted for the Bambu line which consists of 100% vegan and eco-friendly brushes with synthetic bristles and sustainable bamboo handles. I picked up the 15 piece yellow brush set which includes an eco – friendly linen roll up pouch to store the brushes.
After testing these brushes for a few months, I’ve found that they do not shed and hold their shape, even after multiple washes. This set has all the brushes to complete a full makeup look, so it’s perfect for beginners. It’s also very affordable at $99 USD (excluding shipping), which makes each brush about $6.60.
Now onto the review! I’ve split the review into two parts and I’ll be reviewing the face brushes in this post.
980 Powder
980 Powder is a large dome-shaped brush with soft densely packed bristles. I found that this brush is perfect for applying pressed powder over foundation because the large size allows you to powder the entire face in a few strokes. Also, the densely packed bristles pick up plenty of product, so you need to use a light hand to avoid powder overdose.
964 AP Blusher
964 AP Blusher is half the size of the powder brush so it’s a great for a precise application of blush. The bristles aren’t as densely packed as the powder brush but are still as soft. Size wise, it is smaller and flatter than the Real Techniques multi task brush.
955 Duet Fibre Shader
955 Duet Fibre Shader is an incredibly soft dual fibred brush with two levels of bristles. The loosely packed bristles means it only picks up little product, so it’s great for a light dusting of powder. I also love to use this at the end of applying all my makeup to take off any excess powder or blush.
949 Pointed Foundation
949 Pointed Foundation is cut in the shape of a finger and is designed for an easy application of foundation around tight corners of the face. This brush is great for applying very liquid products like MAC face and body foundation because it blends and buffs the product right into the skin. I also love to use the pointed cut for precise contouring work to makeup cheekbones pop.
947 Small Foundation
947 Small foundation brush is also dome-shaped but flat brush. I don’t reach for this brush often because it is too small for a full foundation application. As a touch up brush, this one is perfect because it’s small enough to carry in your purse.
936 Concealer
936 Concealer has condenlsy packed bristles so it’s great for patting concealer on blemished spots. As for applying under eye concealer, because the brush is firm, it does leave streak marks when you blend the concealer. These types of small condense brushes are better to be used for applying cream products onto the eyes such as primer and shadow, because you can really pack product onto the brush.
Part 2 of the review will be coming soon! I purchased my brushes from Bdellium Tools but iherb also sells the 15 piece brush in green.
